Fixing a Dead Pixel on Screen: What Should You Do?

A stuck or dead pixel on an LCD, TFT or OLED screen can easily stress everyone out. If this ever happened to you before, you have probably wondered whether to repair it right away or wait for a few days to see if it got worse. Your screen is made up of millions of pixels and each pixel is a group of the colours green, blue and red sub-pixels which mix to make any colour required. They create the images you see on the screen. Spotting a stuck or dead pixel is very easy for they practically look like a small discoloured dots on the screen. Fixing a Dead pixel on screen seems like something only an IT professional can handle, but hold that though, you need to take a look at these methods to see if you can fix it yourself!

Is It Stuck or Dead?

Are you sure what you are seeing is a dead pixel? What if it’s just stuck? Notice the difference. A stuck pixel will still appear in any of the colours which its three sub-pixels can form, i.e. green, red or blue. On the other hand, if it is a dead pixel, then all sub-pixels will be permanently off and thus resulting in a black pixel. Such thing can be caused by a broken transistor. It should be noted that, even if it rarely occurs, a black pixel may sometimes mean it’s stuck.

In this case, if you happen to see a white or coloured pixel then there is a chance you can fix it on your own. Even if it’s a black pixel that appears, there is still little hope to handle it by yourself.

This is a web application than does not even need to be downloaded first in order to use it. The fact that no installation needed makes it very convenient for a wide variety of platforms including MacOS and iOS. To use it, follow these steps.

  • Open your browser and navigate to the JScreenFix page
  • Look for the “Launch JScreenFix” button and click on it. It’s situated at the bottom of the page.
  • You need to drag the white noise window to where the dead or stuck pixel is located. Then, you simply need to run it for 30 minutes or so.

The website claims that in most cases, stuck pixels can be taken care of for less than 10 minutes. However, it wouldn’t hurt to give it plenty of time. You can try using it several times should the first try is not successful.

Bear in mind that this step uses both JavaScript and HTLM5. It may also work with OLED or LCD screens. The website has 60% success rate when it comes to reinstating stuck pixels. Even though everyone’s mileage varies, but still, it’s quite an impressive figure for a free tool.
